Can You Substitute Almond Flour For All-Purpose Flour?

Yes, definitely! Learning how to bake with almond flour is easy, since it’s roughly a 1:1 replacement for regular flour in most recipes.

This is where the quality and brand you choose can make a big difference. The best almond flour – like our Wholesome Yum brand – will have a super fine grind to get a good texture when baking.

However, sometimes the recipe needs modifications. Almond flour does not have the starch content or gluten that wheat flour has, so it doesn’t create stretchy doughs or chewy texture on its own. There are other ingredients that can be added to almond flour recipes to achieve an end result similar to what you’d get with regular flour.

Can You Substitute Coconut Flour For Almond Flour?

Usually not. Coconut flour absorbs about 3-4 times the amount of moisture that almond flour does, so substituting one for the other would change the recipe drastically.

Even if you reduce the amount by 1/3 or 1/4 to achieve a similar consistency, this would have other side effects, such as different sweetness level. Coconut flour also has a different texture even if you convert the ratio. For best results, stick to recipes developed for each type of flour.

Can You Fry With Almond Flour?

Absolutely! Blanched almond flour is excellent for breading and frying. It doesn’t crisp up quite as much as wheat flour breading does, but is still delicious and works great.

Can Almond Flour Be Used As A Thickener?

No. Wheat flour thickens due to its starch content, which is not present in almond flour, so you can’t thicken a sauce or make a roux with it. You’d need a different thickener for this.

Best Almond Flour ever!

This finely milled, blanched almond flour is lovely in all my baked goods. The chocolate chocolate keto muffins I make with this almond flour are like the "real" thing but better. I use it in fruit crumbles, as a "breading" for chicken cutlets when I don't want to use crushed pork rinds, in bread and cookie recipes. It has the right consistency to give my homemade creations the perfect "crumb" for the perfect taste. I generally freeze a couple of bags of this when I order 3 or more at a time. I can use it directly from the freezer, no need to "thaw". I really do wish the bags were larger than just 1 pound. A two pound or larger bag would be more practical for most of us, I believe. A wonderful product nonetheless!

My Go flour for Life!

Almond Flour

I have been living in Germany for 2 yrs and just moved back to the US (summer 2021). I used a variety of almond flour (mehl) there and was curious about what the US offered. I ordered a bag from WY. The grind is very comparable, although not the finest grind I have used. I made the WY Lemon cake-- it used almost the entire bag (3cups!) That makes for an expensive cake, but a very tasty one that my family gobbled up! (Lots of Gluten-free family members too). I wish WY offered 5lb bags at a slightly discounted price. I was buying 100gram bags at €1.80 in Germany. I would purchase WY AF again, but I would also consider buying blanched almonds (wholesale/Costco) and grinding them in my food processor for comparison.

First time using!

This is my first time trying the Wholesome Yum almond flour. I made the cheesecake recipe. I used this flour for the crust and it was so delicious. I shred it with my Sister and we both enjoyed it. She did not even know it was keto. I asked her to try it first and give me her opinion. We both LOVED it. We did not even think it tasted any different than the normal cheesecake I make. My usual one is more rich-tasting, but I do like the keto cheesecake and I will definitely be making more. I will be trying a lot of recipes on this site. I have already bought just about all the ingredients I need for now. I will give other reviews as I try them. Thank you!

The Best Almond Flour !

I have been baking and cooking with almond flour for a long time- this is by far the best ! The super fine texture makes it blend more like "regular flour' and baked goods don't have that grainy texture that other almond flours have. It arrived super fast and in great condition! My bagels have turned out delicious !

I've used this almond flour quite a bit lately. I've made a cheesecake crust, blueberry muffins, and a zucchini coffee cake from Maya's Keto cookbook. All very good and you don't feel stuffed afterwards or feel guilty for cheating!
